Norfolk Island Hospital

Project Summary :

This project is for the design of a new Hospital on Norfolk Island. The current hospital was built in 1947 and has been added to and altered over the years. These alterations and additions have in many cases compromised on the functionality and structural soundness of the building. Despite being well maintained, the hospital is aged and outdated. Several of the critical units are not conducive to modern medical practice and no longer comply with acceptable standards for health care facilities. Rooms are too small, storage space is insufficient, surfaces inappropriate and patient privacy nonexistent. The efficiency of the provision of care is compromised by the current condition of the hospital. It is proposed to design the masterplan for a new facility which addresses the issues so clearly lacking in the current hospital. The new hospital will be a 30 bed facility, possibly to be built on a staged basis, beginning with aged care, followed by acute care, administration and emergency.

Latest Update :

AWF and pro bono Architects S2F have completed the first stage of the Norfolk Island Hospital project. A schematic design and a Project Definition Plan (PDP) have been completed and forwarded to the community for use in sourcing funding. If successful the project will be renegotiated to move on to Stage 2.
