Charter and Guiding Principles |

AWF is a signatory to the Architects sans Frontiers International Charter. In addition, the following core values and principles guide AWF in the conduct and management of all its activities:
- Environmental Sustainability: AWF strives to reduce the environmental impact of its activities by upholding green building principles through innovation, local and appropriate technology, and resource conservation.
- Capacity Building: AWF seeks to build and maintain long-term relationships with organisations and grass roots initiatives, building partnerships between communities, AWF members and design professionals.
- Community Participation: AWF utilises participatory design processes in ways that are ethical and that promote mutual respect and understanding. AWF assists communities in reaching their own project aspirations, facilitating their visions, and providing training and education.
- Cultural Protocols: AWF respects and observes cultural protocols. This includes recognition of sites and objects of cultural, historical and spiritual significance with respect for environmental and local identity values.
- Education + Awareness: Through its projects and networks AWF promotes a design culture based on appropriateness and social responsibility, seeking to inspire, train and mobilise others to work towards positive change.
- Design Integrity: AWF affirms the importance of aesthetics in making the world a better place and sees design as an ethical tool which respects environmental and local cultural values and builds sustainable outcomes.
- Learning and Development: AWF will commit to continuing evaluation and improvement of projects through experience and lessons learned. We will also share with and learn from other organisations to improve project outcomes.
